One of the oldest Irish Celtic symbols in existence, the triple spiral of the Triskele is believed to have been a spiritual marking of great significance used to decorate buildings of importance, ancient artifacts and in jewelry. To this day, the Triskele can be seen carved into the stone at the entrance to the prehistoric Newgrange monument in Meath Co. Ireland which is believed to have been built around 3200 BC.
Said to symbolize the cycle of life – birth, death & rebirth, the unity of mental, physical & spiritual self or the Triple Goddess – maiden, mother & wise woman. For Celtic Christians the Triskele came to symbolize the Holy Trinity – Father, Son & Holy Spirit. The Triskele continues to be used to this day in flags and emblems, is the basis for the seal of the United States Department of Transportation and is the emblem used in movies like the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Valued for its versatility and beauty, the Triskele is widely used by Irish jewelers to make traditional and contemporary Celtic jewelry.
