Ireland’s lesser-known patron saint, St. Brigid, lived during the time of St. Patrick and was inspired by his teachings to dedicate her life to God and to looking after the poor and sick. She went on to found numerous convents and monasteries throughout Ireland. Legend tells that Brigid converted a pagan chieftain to Christianity, using rushes from the floor to weave a cross as she spoke to him quietly of its meaning, calming him before he died.
Traditionally the St. Brigid's Cross is made by Irish children each year on or before St. Brigid’s Day, the 1st February, to celebrate the beginning of Spring. The St. Brigid’s Cross is believed to protect the homes where it hangs above the entrance, from fire and sickness.
A symbol of Ireland, the intricate design of the St. Brigid’s Cross has long been inspiring Irish jewelers to craft beautiful pendants in gold and silver, worn by many both for the blessing it bestows and it’s links with Irish heritage.
